May you have seen a popular Hollywood film ”The Thing” in 1982-83, you will surely remember that in it, scientists search for a mysterious creature from under the ice during an expedition in Antarctica. This creature later wreaks havoc. It was a fictional idea, but now, almost 40 years later, scientists have discovered a creature. The only difference is that they are not space or dangerous creatures.
It’s hard to believe, but scientists in Antarctica have discovered these strange creatures from the depths of the ice. British Antarctic Survey team Fletcher on this icy continent, Ronnie was analyzing a rock at a depth of 4,000 meters on an ice shelf when he discovered some strange creatures, the results of which were published in the Journal Frontiers in Marine Science between 2015 and 2018.
For the first time in this study, immobile animals were discovered. The research team identified the animals as porous aquatic organisms and the discovery stunned scientists. The researchers said that the discovery was in fact a lucky accident that changed the direction of the expedition and proved that the aquatic life of this continent is surprisingly special.
The discovery of life in the depths of the ocean is not uncommon, but no evidence of life has yet been discovered at a depth of 16 miles in an ice sheet. Germs are thought to live in the Antarctic ice sheet because there is no food for the animals. Although researchers have discovered 22 animals, much remains to be learned about them.
The process of learning about these creatures and their environment is progressing slowly, due to their being in the deepest depths of the ice. Scientists only get information after drilling in the ice layer, and so far they have only been able to analyze an area 130ft by 70ft the size of a tennis court. Antarctica’s ice shelf covers an area of 1.5 million square kilometers.
The research team says, that our discovery raises several questions, such as how did it get there? What is their diet? And since when have they been here?.
