Oral Covid-19 vaccine trial starting in China

Web Desk. China is starting a clinical trial of a Covid-19 vaccine that will not need to be injected but can be taken orally.

Xuefeng Yu, co-founder, and chief executive of CanSino Biologics, announced the trial of the vaccine. Covid-19 vaccines manufactured in China are less effective than vaccines manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

In early April, the director of China’s Center for Disease Control acknowledged that the safety rate of Chinese vaccines was not very high and that combinations of vaccines were being considered to increase their effectiveness.

Xuefeng Yu told CNBC that the oral vaccine would be more effective than the injectable vaccine, as the new vaccine would enter the body through the same route as the virus.

CanSinoBIO has partnered with the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology to develop the vaccine. It is to be noted that a Covid-19 vaccine developed by CanSino has been approved for use in several countries including China and Pakistan.

The CEO of CanSino Biologics said the oral vaccine would provide extra protection by activating antibodies or T cells. He added that if the protective layer fails and the virus penetrates deep into the body, other parts of the immune system will be able to fight the virus.

He said, “this way people will get more protection and that’s why we decided to develop this vaccine.” He added that the company is using the same strategy for the preparation of this vaccine which is used for the preparation of oral TB vaccine.

He says that during trials in Canada, it was discovered that such a small amount of TB vaccine provides protection. The CanSino single-dose Covid vaccine has been tested in various countries, including Pakistan, in which it has proved to be 68.83% effective in protecting against the disease.

In comparison, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is 91% effective and the Moderna vaccine is more than 90% effective. According to Xuefeng Yu, research is being done on giving booster shots six months after the first injection by CanSino to improve the immune response against the coronavirus.

He said, research is also looking at combinations of other vaccines, we need to know which data is better.
