The use of dentures is very common all over the world due to the loss of teeth in middle age or old age. However, scientists now claim to have discovered an antibody that helps new teeth grow in place of broken teeth.
Needless to say, once a tooth is broken in childhood when new teeth grow if they break then no more teeth will grow to replace them. The addition of this antibody to a Gene called USAG1 increases the availability of specific growth elements which gradually leads to new teeth growing.
In the study published in the Medical Journal Science Advances, scientists also conducted successful experiments on Mice. During the research, the scientists targeted the USAG1 gene which contains 2 signaling molecules that play a role in tooth development.
However, if these compounds also play a role in controlling the growth of other organs, interfering with their formation can have serious side effects. During the experiment, scientists used different Monoclonal antibodies to change the ability of USAG1 to interact with both molecules.
After several failed experiments, they were able to discover a specific antibody that could bind this gene to molecules and had no effect. This enabled scientists to stimulate the process of growing teeth without harmful effects.
Researchers say that when a molecule, USAG1 is attached to a BMP, the process of growing new teeth is stopped. Researchers added, We already knew that suppressing USAG1 was good for dental development, but we didn’t know if it was enough to make new teeth grow.
Research has shown that inhibiting gene activity can increase the number of molecules needed to grow new teeth. This technique can take a long time to be tested on humans before it will be tested on various mammals such as dogs.
Experiments so far have been successful and this technique could potentially be useful to humans, but there is still much work to be done to test it.
