Web Desk. Turkmenistan has declared a new national holiday for the Alabai dog breed. According to Daily Mail, April 25 celebrated as a national holiday in Turkmenistan.
Alabai breed is the national dog of Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov erected a gold statue of his favorite breed of dog in November 2020 in the capital, Ashgabat.
Turkmenistan also celebrates a festival called Akhal-Teke Horse on April 25th. This particular breed of horse is considered part of Turkmenistan culture. Competitions were also held on Alabai Day to find the best of the Shepherd dogs.
The Alabai dog belongs to the Central Asian family of shepherd dogs, which are usually raised by herdsmen to protect their livestock.
President Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov awarded the Alabai dog “Bravery” for guarding the borders. The President’s son, who holds the post of Deputy Prime Minister, presented the dog with a medal and a car as a gift to its owner.
Akhal-Teke horse races are also organized on the occasion of the national holiday. Horses of this breed are known for their beauty. In the former Soviet state of Turkmenistan, dogs and horses are considered a source of national pride.
Last year, a dog statue was erected in the capital, Ashgabat. In another square, a short distance away stands a statue of President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov on horseback.
